Tell us about yourself.
Hello there! My name is Emmy and I am from Northern New Jersey. I graduated in 2019 from Brandeis University with a major in HSSP (Health: Science, Society, Policy) and a minor in Environmental Studies. I have always been fascinated by the intersections of human and environmental health, but originally thought I wanted to continue exploring these intersections through a medical lens. With a plan to attend Physician Assistant School, I spent the year after graduation working in a private medical practice as a Medical Assistant.
While working, I realized the tremendous opportunity for sustainable innovations in the medical field. I think the pandemic especially revealed avenues in which sustainable practices could be implemented in medicine, such as creating highly effective reusable masks in lieu of single-use ones. This experience made me realize that I wanted to pursue an MBA specifically tailored to sustainability so that I could work directly with businesses to drive sustainable innovation. I am so excited to be a part of the 2021 cohort of the MBA-SBP program and am especially looking forward to learning how to make a strong business case for sustainability! I hope after graduation to work directly in an organization and create lasting sustainability improvements to benefit humans and our planet!
What skill would you like to master?
I would love to master cooking. I love to garden, eat local, and try new foods. While currently my cooking is fine, it is not going to win any awards! Being able to impress my friends and family with beautiful home cooked meals would make me so happy!
What are you most looking forward to the in the next 10 years?
I am really looking forward to exploring more of the United States and the world. I am hopeful that I will work for a company that will allow me to live in different places. I have always had a travel bug and would love to live abroad and see new cities!
What could you give a 30-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?
I could easily give a presentation about how to start building sustainable lifestyle habits. Since college I have been trying to live a more sustainable lifestyle and I truly believe that if we all made small lifestyle changes to help the environment it would make a huge impact. I love to research, write, and talk about this topic! (Emily’s blog, “Eco-Friendly With Emmy,” offers tips for sustainable living.)
Where would you spend all your time if you could?
I would spend all my time outside if I could. I love to garden, hike, camp, and travel! If I am not home, you can often find me exploring new places or just lounging in the sun with a good book. I am really looking forward to checking out everything that Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas have to offer!
What are you most looking forward to in the MBA-SBP program?
I am really looking forward to the curriculum of the MBA-SBP program. I want to work directly with businesses and demonstrate a strong business case for sustainability. As my undergraduate degree is in health sciences, I am now looking to build all these new skills in my graduate degree. I am really looking forward to learning a business skillset and developing tools to succeed in the business world!
