Student Spotlight: Jin Dassanayake

Tell us about yourself.
I am an international student, born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand. I recently completed my undergraduate degree at Duquesne, where I earned a BSBA, with a major in Finance, and minors in Accounting and Legal Studies.
I was drawn to the US by the opportunity to play college sport, and this year will be my fifth and final as a member of Duquesne’s Division I Men’s Tennis team. I believe Duquesne’s One-Year MBA program is the perfect way to cap my time here, as it will provide me with the tools I need to pursue my passion at the intersection of finance and sustainability, while also allowing me to play one last year of competitive sport.

What are you most looking forward to in the next 10 years?
The uncertainty of it! I would love to say getting a job in sustainable finance, or moving somewhere exotic and new, but I honestly have no idea what the next 10 years hold. With that said, the last 5 years have also brought such uncertainty – should I do my masters; should I stay at Duquesne; when would the COVID pandemic end – but they have also provided so many opportunities, and I look forward to seeing what unfolds ahead.

Where is the most interesting place you’ve been?
I’ve been lucky enough to play tennis tournaments throughout the Pacific Islands. So, New Caledonia would probably be the most interesting place I’ve been!

What is the best way to start the day?
With a black coffee and a run!

Where would you spend all of your time if you could?
The beach. Doesn’t matter where, as long as the sun is out.

Who inspires you to be better?
My parents.
