Tell us about yourself.
Hi! My name is Erica Anderson and I am from South Fayette, PA, which is about 30 minutes south of the city. I attended Duquesne for undergrad and majored in Supply Chain Management with a minor in Marketing. Although I haven’t had an internship experience, I currently work at McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood and Steaks as a hostess. Working in the hospitality industry in this position has taught me a lot in regard to problem-solving, appropriateness of reaction, efficiency, and effective communication. In addition, I have held many other volunteer and work positions since high school that have helped me learn more skills in various environments. What led me to the MBA-SBP program was the great importance of sustainability. As a supply chain student, the concept of sustainability has always been a key point in my learning as well as my interests. Sustainability is a main concern for me on a few different fronts – some of those include: the affect it has on the business I will work for, on the environment, on my personal values, and on the overall economy.
Through this program I hope to further my understanding of sustainability measures that are currently in place (effective and ineffective, or lack thereof) and think critically about how they can be expanded upon. My dream career upon graduating in May 2022 would be within the supply chain field, specifically in procurement. The actions of businesses inevitably influence the environment, economy, and the individual businesses themselves, so it is important to me to gain knowledge that I can bring to the table to any company I work for. The global economy relies on sustainable practices to have a strong and promising future. My interest in this program goes beyond myself and any company I could work for. I hope to be part of a newer, more sustainable wave of thinking that will benefit the economy and the environment.
If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?
If I could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, I would have a good chance at winning a medal for time spent at TJ Maxx. It is one of my favorite places to go for home and pet items without breaking the bank (not sponsored). At one point a cashier knew me by name and remembered my purchases. I haven’t been there lately, but I have a feeling I will be soon!
What could you give a 30-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?
I could easily give a 30-minute presentation with absolutely no preparation about my dog, Oakley. Trust me, I somehow do it almost every day with someone. Whether it be one of my friends, family members, or a random person at the dog park, I could go on forever telling them random details and facts about her. Sometimes they ask and sometimes they don’t, but that doesn’t stop me from telling them! She is the first dog I am raising on my own and I can definitely confirm that I would be considered a crazy dog mom.
Where is the most interesting place you’ve been?
The most interesting place I have been was the Scottish Highlands. The scenery itself is extremely beautiful with the mountains, Loch Ness, castles, ruins, and greenery. Beyond that, though, the history behind the area was fascinating to learn about. Most commonly, there is the story of the Loch Ness Monster. Additionally, the history of Scottish clans and battles are deeply rooted in this area.
What is the best way to start the day?
For me, best way to start the day is with an iced coffee. I’m not usually a morning person, so coffee is so helpful to get going. After having a coffee, it helps me to go through a list of things that I want or have to do throughout the day. I usually make this list the night before and going through it in the morning helps me to plan my day and feel less overwhelmed as I go.
Where would you spend all of your time if you could?
Where I would spend all of my time if I could is not so much a specific place, but specific people. I am extremely extroverted and value everyone close to me in my life, so it doesn’t necessarily matter where I am as long as I am with my favorite people! I know that any place or situation could be fun with the right people there.
