Student Spotlight: Katie Borovicka

Tell us about yourself.
Hi! My name is Katie Borovicka and I am originally from Cleveland, Ohio! I majored in Marketing with a double minor in Sales and International Business at Duquesne. Over the course of my undergraduate years at Duquesne, I had a couple internships and worked a few jobs. One of the greatest employment opportunities that I had during my undergraduate years was my retail banking internship with PNC Bank, which taught me what it is like to work in a corporate environment, as well as how to adapt to uncertain times, as my internship was during the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic! This experience also helped me to better understand the retail banking world, specifically the customer care sector of the banking world, and how important catering to the customer truly is! Reflecting on the decision to continue my education, what led me to apply to the MBA-SBP program was the importance of sustainability to me personally and in the business world today. There are so many opportunities for businesses today to expand in the sustainability realm, and I am looking forward to learning about those opportunities through this program!

Overall, I am incredibly excited to expand my knowledge regarding the sustainability efforts that are already being offered by many businesses here in Pittsburgh and beyond, and I am excited to learn how to help businesses incorporate more eco-friendly practices into their everyday business efforts upon my graduation from this program in May of 2022. My dream career coming out of this program would be something in the marketing or digital marketing space, such as a social media manager or an advertising position, but overall, I hope to help any and all of my future employers to implement better sustainable business practices into their workplace(s). However, my main goal coming out of this program is to be able to use my knowledge regarding sustainable business practices in my future workplace to educate my peers about the importance of building a sustainable business in order to positively impact both the environment and the business itself!

What skill would you like to master?
One skill I would love to master is cooking! I really enjoy cooking a lot, but I am not the best chef (I tend to burn things and set off the fire alarm in my house pretty often). However, there is always room for improvement, and hopefully I will continue to master more recipes in the next couple of years!

What could you give a 30-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?
Something I could give a 30-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation would be the topic of “why owning a cat is just as great as owning a dog”. Believe me when I say I used to not be a cat person, I thought they were mean, and since my family grew up with a 80 pound Golden Retriever who believed she was a lap dog her entire life, I always just assumed that cats were not nearly as great as dogs. However, a close friend of mine recently got a kitten, and after babysitting it for her when she needed me to, I can honestly say I am now both a cat and dog person. Therefore, I am fully convinced that I could give a very persuasive 30-minute presentation to anyone with no preparation whatsoever on why you should be (and can be) both a dog person AND a cat person!

What is the best way to start the day?
Personally, to me, the best way to start each day is with a fresh cup of coffee, a good breakfast and a quick morning walk, just to get your blood flowing a bit, get some steps in, and to relax a little before you get to work for the day! Also, coffee adds a little extra pep-in-your step and helps get your energy levels high early in the morning, which personally, I usually need because I am not a morning person!

Where would you spend all your time if you could?
If I could, I would spend all of my time living in a small beach town. I love the beach (and the outdoors in general), and there is just something about the atmosphere of small beach towns that are just hard to beat. The beach is relaxing, fun, and peaceful all in one, and if I lived closer to one, that is definitely where I would spend all of my time.

Who inspires you to be better?
I would say my mom always inspires me to be better. She is my greatest supporter in everything that I do and is one of the main reasons that I decided to apply to the MBA-SBP program! She went to graduate school herself, and when I originally mentioned my interest in graduate school to her, she was quick to offer support, helped me look into programs, offered her advice, and assisted me in finding the right program for me!
