Graduate Advisory Council Spotlight: Cary Smith

I was born & raise in the South Hills of Pittsburgh PA, graduating from Mt. Lebanon HS then moving on to Duquesne University where I received a BSBA in 1990 & a MBA in 1992.

I have lived outside of Pittsburgh since 1992 but will never lose my Yinzer blood, especially my long hope (and weekly Novenas) for the Dukes return to the NCAA Tournament.

My career has taken me from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles to Florida, and now I live in Charlotte North Carolina, where I met my wife & started my family.

The journey to date, my route has been in roles for Banks, Management Consultancies, and now at an Analytics Software provider. My favorite activity has been learning from my colleagues & customers while we partner to solve challenging business initiatives and having the opportunity to build, grow, & mentor high performing teams.

If you find yourself passing through Charlotte, look me up. Always good to share a drink with a fellow Duquesne Alum.

What made you want to give back to the School of Business?

Duquesne is a special place to me. It provided the environment to learn, question, grow, expand, and fail & succeed.  The School of Business was my 2nd home for 3+ years. I am honored to be able to volunteer & share the experiences I have gained since leaving The Bluff. The timing was right to give back & pass it forward.

What is the most important piece of advice you would give to a graduate business student looking to advance professionally?

Trust your talent, be authentic to what is true to yourself, don’t shy away from a challenge or being out of your comfort zone, learn, and soak up the journey.

What are you most looking forward to in the next 10 years?

Watching my 8 & 9 year old daughters grow up and the experience of being a dad & a husband (I started my family late 😊 )

What is the best way to start the day?

Make your bed, brush your teeth, comb your hair … you will have accomplished 3 things before leaving your house!

Where would you spend all of your time if you could?

On my favorite golf courses.
